The Wind and the Rain
“Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14).
I was teaching kindergarten music, and we had been practicing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” for an upcoming program. Meanwhile, one of my students had just returned from Disney World, and she couldn’t wait to tell us all about it. But she didn’t talk what rides she rode or what princesses she saw. She gave us this joyous outpouring:
“The weathermen said it was going to rain every single day of our vacation. And I prayed it wouldn’t. And It never rained, Ms. Lorraine. Never. We had the best time!!! And I thought of our song that says, “He’s got the wind and the rain in His hands.”
She was exuberant, filled with wonder. And I was challenged. She didn’t wonder, as an adult might, if a prayer for the weather was too trivial. And then, when God held off the rain, she didn’t look for a meteorological explanation. She knew God had answered her prayer.
I wonder what concerns we don’t give to God because we think they are too small. And, when a prayer is answered, are we filled with joy and eager to share? And, when we sing words of truth like, “He’s got the wind and the rain in His hands,” do we really believe them, or are they just pleasant song lyrics?
Holy Father, please show us where our faith is too grown-up. Give us renewed trust, excitement, and a desire to talk with You about everything. Let the text of our worship songs penetrate our spirits. Children do this naturally. Please make us like one of those. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
